Thoughts before departure

The last few days I've felt the need to post a new entry on my blog. The only problem was that I couldn't think of anything to post about. That probably seems unusual considering that I have less than one week left in the U.S. and so much to be preparing and thinking about (not to mention good-byes to say) as I get ready to leave. But then I realized why I was devoid of thought and inspiration for my blog: I'm as ready and prepared to leave as I can possibly be at this point.

This doesn't mean that I'm all packed, am fluent in all 11 official South African languages, and know how to handle every situation and adjustment that I'll face in South Africa. No, it means instead that I'm as ready mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, etc. as I can be on this side of the Atlantic. I feel like I've come to terms with being away from family and friends for two years and that I know as much about South Africa and serving in the Peace Corps there that I can possibly know without actually being in South Africa. I know I'll have loads and loads and loads and loads of stuff to comprehend, digest (mentally and physically), learn, and adjust to once I get there, but I'm not there yet. Thus, I don't feel there's really anything more I can do to prepare before I leave.

So, as I finish packing, signing my final Peace Corps paperwork, and saying my final goodbyes, I know that everything I've read and learned about Peace Corps service and South Africa, as much as it may be, barely scratches the surface compared to the experiences and learning that will happen once I get there. I know my Peace Corps experience in South Africa is going to be an amazing experience full of important service, cultural learning, personal struggles and growth, and deep and meaningful friendships, and I can't wait!
